What is Autism (ASD)?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects communication, social interaction, and behaviour. These children learn differently — not less. Early intervention in the first 6 years makes the biggest difference.
English + HindiSigns to watch for
- No consistent eye contact by 12 months
- Does not respond to their name
- No pointing or gesturing by 12 months
- No two-word phrases by 24 months
- Repetitive behaviours (hand-flapping, lining objects)

What you can do at home
- Call your child's name often and celebrate every response
- Sit face-to-face during play — at eye level
- Use peek-a-boo and clapping games to build eye contact
- Teach pointing — hold a bubble bottle and wait for them to point before blowing
- Use simple one-word labels: 'water', 'ball', 'come', 'eat'
- Praise every attempt to communicate, however small
- Practice the ESDM Teaching Loop: Gain Attention → Engage → Model → Prompt → Reward
- Embed 1–2 hours of practice daily in bath, meals, and dressing routines
Recommended
- Use simple, clear, one-step instructions
- Give extra time to respond (10–15 seconds)
- Use visual supports: pictures, charts, schedules
- Stay calm during meltdowns — reduce noise and stimulation
- Follow the child's lead in play
- Keep consistent routines every day
Avoid
- Don't force eye contact
- Don't give long verbal explanations
- Don't punish meltdowns
- Don't change routines without preparation
- Don't rely only on screen-based activities
